About Bear Island State Forest

Bear Island State Forest is located in Lake and St. Louis Counties in northeastern Minnesota. Covering over 80,000 acres, this forest area is characterized by a mixture of boreal forest species such as black spruce, tamarack, pine, and aspen. The forest lies within the Superior National Forest ecosystem and offers visitors a classic northern Minnesota outdoor experience with its rugged terrain, numerous wetlands, and freshwater lakes. Historically, the land was managed for timber production, but it also supports a rich variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, black bear, moose, and many bird species like the common loon. Recreational activities are varied and include hiking on several established trails, dispersed camping, hunting, fishing in its lakes and streams, as well as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. Notable landmarks include Bear Island Lake and several scenic wetlands that provide good opportunities for wildlife observation and photography. The forest attracts visitors seeking solitude as well as family groups who enjoy primitive camping and quiet paddling experiences. Its location adjacent to state highways and secondary roads provides reasonable access while maintaining a remote, backcountry feel. Bear Island State Forest is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, emphasizing multi-use management to balance conservation and resource utilization with outdoor recreation.
